One would have to admit that the countertop is of utmost significance when designing and construction a kitchen. Spending a fortune on cabinet form and materials can be for naught of it was all topped up with a low capability countertop. When choosing countertops, the first thing that comes to mind would commonly be the material type. Big spenders would have access to top end materials such as pure marble or granite countertops while those on a more modest funds would probably spend a inexpensive number on solid surfaces such as corian or maybe even laminates like Formica. Exotic new materials and fashions of countertop are also gaining popularity such the alkemi countertop or the steel countertop. Having decided the material type desired, the next big decision would have to be the color of the countertop.

Countertop color can make or break a prosperous kitchen cabinet design. choosing a countertop color that does not blend into the kitchen surroundings can have disastrous effects on the ambience. choosing a beloved color is not an easy task, as countertop materials tend to have some form of texture to them. The trick is in getting the right color to go with the right texture that will complement the whole kitchen design.

Generally, if you have a light themed design, then a dark countertop will add a good contrast to balance out the space and pull everything together. If your kitchen theme is leaning more towards white, then a countertop color scheme that is leaning more towards black would be the way to go. Deep black marble like countertops goes well in a white themed kitchen. If you have light cabinets sitting on dark flooring, then a countertop that is a shade or two lighter than the floor would help lift the kitchen cabinet form and add a sense of space to the kitchen. Having a dark colored countertop that matches the shade of a dark floor could make things look a small flat.

Kitchens with a warm pastel color scheme would go well with a light colored cabinet form topped off with a similar pastel colored countertop that is a shade or two lighter than the walls. Again, this will add a sense of depth in the kitchen and help utter that warm atmosphere. Kitchens with dark walls could probably do with a similarly dark cabinet topped with a light colored countertop for the integrated effect. Dark walls with light cabinets and countertop on the other hand can help space things out and push out the dark walls.
